Top 7 World Cup maulings

Portugal blasted seven without reply against North Korea on Monday to record the biggest win of World Cup 2010 so far.

A healthy margin of victory over minnows was once the staple diet of World Cup finals football but who are the unlucky few to join the North Koreans in our run through of the Top 7 spankings in World Cup history?

7. Portugal 7-0 North Korea (2010)

It is often said there are no easy games left in international football.

But, witness Portugual's second-half mauling of the North Koreans and you'll struggle to find a more one-sided affair.

In stark contrast to the gritty and impressive performance the Koreans had put in for their opener against Brazil, the Portuguese ruthlessly exposed the frailties of a shell-shocked defence in a blistering second-half assault.

Sadly, for the 24 million North Koreans who were tuning into their first ever live World Cup finals match, it may now be their last.

6. Sweden 8-0 Cuba (1938)

Cuba arrived at the third World Cup finals as one of only three non-European teams.

Replacing the Mexicans, who pulled out, Cuba managed to make it through to the quarter-finals after a shock first-round replay victory over Romania.

But hat-tricks from Tore Keller and Gustav Wetterstrom handed Sweden a mammoth 8-0 victory and reminded the baseball-mad Caribbean island that football just isn't their sport.

5. Uruguay 7-0 Scotland (1954)

Scotland's long history of shambolic World Cup showings all began back in 1954.

Appearing at the World Cup finals for the first time, the Scots started their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Austria.

But things really started going wrong when manager Andy Beattie resigned just hours before their next group game against Uruguay.

The reigning world champions took advantage to inflict upon Scotland their worst ever defeat.

4. Germany 8-0 Saudi Arabia (2002)

There weren't many who gave Germany much chance of glory before the World Cup arrived in Asia eight years ago.

But, the Germans gave a taste of things to come with a blistering performance in their opening group game, picking apart a sorry Saudi Arabia team.

The Middle Eastern country lost their remaining two games to be dumped out of the tournament with a minus 12 goal difference, while the Germans progressed to the final where they finally met their match with defeat to Brazil.

Hungary 8-3 West Germany (1954)

Hungary arrived at the 1954 finals in Switzerland as the overwhelming favourites.

Undefeated in four years and buoyed by their 6-3 victory over England at Wembley the previous year, the Magnificent Magyars seemed destined to lift their first World Cup.

But if one country was to stop them, that team was West Germany.

Drawn together in the group stage, Hungary ran rampant against South Korea in their first game scoring nine without reply. And, three days later, Hungary's Golden Team gave a masterclass in how to play the beautiful game.

Hungary marched on to the final where their Teutonic cousins were again awaiting.

But, with their best player Ferenc Puskas not fully fit and the West Germans now fielding a full-strength side, the Germans had the last laugh by lifting the trophy with a 3-2 victory.

2. Hungary 10-1 El Salvador (1982)

On June 15 1982 Luis Baltazar Ramirez Zapata scored El Salvador's first ever goal at a World Cup finals.

Sadly, his team were already trailing 5-0 and, by the game's end, would set a new finals record for the number of goals conceded in a single game.

The central Americans were to recover a modicum of respect in their final two group games, losing by a single goal to Belgium and falling 2-0 to the world champions Argentina.

But, 28 years after that June night in Elche, El Salvador are still awaiting their next taste of World Cup finals football.

1. Yugoslavia 9-0 Zaire (1974)

So pleased was Zaire President Mobutu Sese Seko when his country's football team qualified for the World Cup finals that he showered the players with extravagant gifts and hailed them as heroes.

In 1974 Zaire became the first country to represent black Africa and, for a ruthless dictator, the potential to exploit such opportunities was irresistible.

But, after a battling showing in their opening group match defeat to Scotland, it all went horribly wrong.

Many believe the players simply didn't try after discovering they weren't to be paid for their efforts. Others saw it as a case of split loyalties for Zaire's Yugoslav coach Blagoje Vidinic. Indeed, throwing on an untested goalkeeper half-way through the first-half didn't seem the wisest of ideas.

But, such was Mobutu's shame after the 9-0 humiliation, that the players arrived back in Kinshasa as outcasts. Many slipped into the unknown and, to this day, Zaire have never returned to a World Cup finals.
